Pembrokeshire, located on the southwestern coast of Wales, is known for its stunning natural beauty, charming coastal towns, and rich history. While it is a popular tourist destination, there are still many hidden gems waiting to be discovered by adventurous travelers. As a local, I have had the pleasure of exploring these off-the-beaten-path destinations and am excited to share them with you. So, put on your hiking boots, grab your camera, and get ready to uncover the hidden gems of Pembrokeshire.
1. Walk the Coastal Path
Pembrokeshire is home to the famous Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a 186-mile long trail that winds its way along the rugged coastline. While many tourists flock to the more popular sections of the path, there are plenty of hidden gems to be found along the way. One of my favorite sections is the stretch between Porthgain and Abereiddy. This 5-mile walk takes you through stunning cliffs, hidden coves, and abandoned slate quarries. The views are breathtaking, and you will often have the path all to yourself.
2. Explore the Preseli Hills
The Preseli Hills, located in the northern part of Pembrokeshire, may not be as well-known as the nearby Brecon Beacons, but they are just as beautiful. The hills are full of ancient history, with burial chambers, standing stones, and the famous Stonehenge bluestones all found within its boundaries. One of my favorite spots in the Preseli Hills is Foel Drygarn, a rocky peak that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a challenging hike, but the reward is well worth it.
3. Visit the Secret Beaches
Pembrokeshire is renowned for its beautiful beaches, but the more popular ones can get crowded during the summer months. For a more secluded beach experience, head to some of the lesser-known beaches that are tucked away along the coast. One of my favorites is Abermawr Beach, a pebble beach that is only accessible by foot. It’s a bit of a hike to get there, but the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views make it well worth the effort.
4. Discover Hidden Waterfalls
While most people think of mountains and lakes when they think of waterfalls, Pembrokeshire is home to some stunning hidden waterfalls that are worth seeking out. One of my favorites is Cenarth Falls, a series of cascading waterfalls located on the River Teifi. The falls are surrounded by lush greenery, making it a beautiful spot for a picnic or a peaceful walk.
5. Go Wildlife Spotting
Pembrokeshire is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and with its many hidden spots, it’s the perfect place for some off-the-beaten-path wildlife spotting. Skomer Island, located just off the coast, is a must-visit for bird lovers. It’s home to the largest colony of puffins
