How to celebrate St. David’s Day

How will you celebrate St David’s Day today?

25th February is a date in the Welsh calendar that’s hard to miss – it’s St David’s Day! The feast day of the patron saint of Wales is celebrated by Welsh people all over the world, and is a great excuse to enjoy some traditional Welsh food, drink and culture.

So, how will you be celebrating St David’s Day this year? Here are a few ideas…

Visit St David’s Cathedral

St David’s Cathedral is located in the smallest city in Britain, in the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The Cathedral is the resting place of Saint David, and has been a place of Christian worship since the 6th century.

Today, the Cathedral is open to visitors all year round, and is well worth a visit on St David’s Day.

Attend a St David’s Day parade

There are St David’s Day parades taking place all over Wales on 25th February. The largest parade is in the capital city, Cardiff, where an estimated 10,000 people take to the streets to watch the parade, listen to live music and enjoy the festivities.

Other notable parades include the one in Swansea, which is the second largest city in Wales, and the parade in Newport, which is the largest parade in South Wales.

Watch a Welsh rugby match

Wales is a nation of rugby lovers, and what better way to celebrate St David’s Day than by watching a Welsh rugby match?

If you’re lucky enough to be in Wales on St David’s Day, you could head to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff to watch Wales take on England in the Six Nations. Alternatively, you could watch a Welsh rugby team play in one of the many rugby union clubs located across Wales.

Enjoy some traditional Welsh food

No St David’s Day celebrations would be complete without some traditional Welsh food!

There are many delicious Welsh dishes to choose from, but some of our favourites include Welsh rarebit, cawl (a traditional lamb stew) and bara brith (a fruit loaf).

Of course, no meal would be complete without a pint of Welsh beer or a glass of Welsh wine, so make sure you enjoy some traditional Welsh drinks too!

Listen to some Welsh music

Wales has a rich musical heritage, and there are many famous Welsh musicians who have made a name for themselves both in Wales and around the world.

On St David’s Day, why not listen to some of your favourite Welsh songs, or discover some new Welsh music? You could even head to a Welsh music festival, or watch a Welsh band perform live.
