Nestled on the southwestern coast of Wales, Pembrokeshire is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. While the county is well-known for its stunning coastline and beautiful beaches, there is so much more to explore beyond the popular tourist spots. As a local, I have had the privilege of uncovering some of Pembrokeshire’s best-kept secrets and I am excited to share them with you. 1. Walk Along the Coastal Path
Pembrokeshire is home to the only coastal national park in the UK, covering 186 miles of breathtaking scenery. While many visitors flock to the popular stretches of the path, there are plenty of lesser-known sections that offer a more secluded experience. One of my personal favorites is the section from Abereiddi to Porthgain, which features stunning views of the rugged coastline, old slate quarries, and abandoned mines. The walk is about 6 miles long and takes you through a variety of landscapes, from grassy fields to rocky cliffs. Make sure to stop at the Blue Lagoon, a former slate quarry that has been transformed into a beautiful spot for swimming and cliff jumping.
2. Explore the Preseli Hills
The Preseli Hills, located in the northern part of Pembrokeshire, are often overlooked by visitors but offer a unique and tranquil experience. The hills are rich in history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Stone Age. One of the most fascinating sites is the Carn Menyn, a group of ancient standing stones that are believed to have been the source of the bluestones used to build Stonehenge. You can also explore the nearby hillforts, burial chambers, and ancient settlements that dot the landscape. The Preseli Hills are also a great spot for hiking and offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
3. Discover Hidden Beaches
While Pembrokeshire is known for its beautiful beaches, there are some hidden gems that are not as well-known. One of my favorites is Barafundle Bay, located on the southern coast. This secluded beach can only be reached by foot, but the effort is well worth it. With its crystal clear waters and golden sands, it is often referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Another hidden gem is Druidston Haven, a small beach tucked away in a cove and accessible only by a steep path. It is the perfect spot for a peaceful picnic or a swim in the calm waters.
