Trains, Castles and Gardens: A Day Out in Snowdonia, North Wales
Snowdonia, in North Wales, is a land of contrasts. In the space of a few miles you can go from the bustling seaside town of Llandudno, with its grand Victorian promenade, to the wild and rugged mountains of Snowdonia National Park.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a must-do while you’re in the area. The train takes you on a journey from Llanberis, at the foot of Snowdon, to the summit of Wales’ highest mountain. The views from the top are breathtaking, and on a clear day you can see for miles.
If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, Portmeirion is well worth a visit. This Italianate village, designed by architect Clough Williams-Ellis, is a real hidden gem. It’s like something out of a fairytale, and has been used as a filming location for TV shows such as Doctor Who and The Prisoner.
If you’re a garden lover, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Snowdonia. Bodnant Garden, near Conwy, is one of the most beautiful gardens in Wales. With its stunning views, waterfalls, bridges and meandering streams, it’s easy to see why.
