Nestled along the southwestern coast of Wales lies Pembrokeshire, a picturesque region known for its stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and charming seaside towns. While many tourists flock to the popular spots such as Tenby and St. Davids, there are hidden gems scattered throughout Pembrokeshire waiting to be discovered. As a local, I have had the privilege of exploring these off-the-beaten-path adventures and have compiled a guide to share some of my favorite hidden gems in Pembrokeshire.
1. Barafundle Bay
Located near the village of Stackpole, Barafundle Bay is often referred to as the “Jewel in the Crown” of Pembrokeshire. This secluded beach is only accessible by foot, adding to its charm and making it a hidden gem for visitors. The walk to the beach takes you through a scenic wooded area, and once you reach the bay, you are greeted with golden sand, crystal clear waters, and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or a quiet day by the sea.
2. Carew Castle and Tidal Mill
While many visitors head to Pembroke Castle, a popular tourist attraction, Carew Castle and Tidal Mill offer a unique and lesser-known experience. This 12th-century castle is surrounded by a mill pond and is one of the few remaining tidal mills in the UK. Visitors can explore the castle ruins, climb the towers for stunning views, and learn about the history of the tidal mill. The castle also hosts various events throughout the year, including medieval reenactments and outdoor movie screenings.
3. Skomer Island
Located just off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Skomer Island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The island is home to one of the largest colonies of Atlantic puffins in the world, as well as other seabirds such as guillemots and razorbills. Visitors can take a boat trip to the island and spend the day hiking, birdwatching, and admiring the stunning coastal scenery. The island is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including grey seals and dolphins.
4. Stackpole Estate
The Stackpole Estate is a hidden gem for nature lovers, offering a diverse landscape of woodlands, lakes, and beaches. The estate is home to several picturesque walking trails, including the famous Bosherston Lily Ponds walk, which takes you through a series of lily-covered lakes and ends at the stunning Broad Haven South beach. The estate also has a walled garden, a medieval church, and a working watermill that visitors can explore.
5. Cwm Deri Vineyard
For a unique experience in Pembrokeshire, head to Cwm Deri Vineyard, a family-run winery located in the heart of the Pembrokeshire countryside. The vineyard offers tours and tastings, where visitors can learn about the winemaking process and sample their award-winning wines. The
