Poppit has nice and quick BT fibre to premises broadband, however away from Poppit I need to make do with standard VDSL and tend to change every time I can to get the best deal.
Now rather than use the supplied routers by Sky / NOW Broadband I have a setup with a Vigor router (acting as a modem ) and a Pfsense server. Behind that I use a Ruckus Zone Director and a few AP’s. That is a post for another time. Using my own kit normally means minor tweaks to the WAN interface and off I go. No changing Wifi on all the devices and I get kit I know which is of a decent spec. Everyone should have a PFsense (Opnsense ) firewall! I also use mine to route which I know is a bit of an abuse but saves an extra box. PFSense is probably more secure than the tat that some broadband companies supply. To be fair to NOW I’ve not even unwrapped their router. It might be excellent, I’ve not looked at it in anyway.
Now setting up PFSense for Sky and Now broadband was a little non standard. There is a good guide here https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/SkyUK.html for Opnsense which is a fork of PFSense so it’s pretty much the same thing.
HOWEVER cutting and pasting the send options in the guide caused some issues with the values not being saved. Some special characters I suspect. So just type, carefully, the values in and you should be fine. I wasted 30mins of my life trying to figure that out. It was early in the morning.
